Trailer Tires Age Out Before They Wear Out

A customer flagged us down last month with a blown tire on a boat trailer near Black Point. The tread on that tire was nearly full. It looked new from five feet away. The date code said it was nine years old, and the sidewall had let go in the heat with the boat loaded.

That's the thing about trailer tires that surprises people: they almost never wear out. They age out. And in South Florida, they age fast.

Why age kills them

Your truck's tires flex, roll, and wear down long before the rubber gets old. A trailer tire lives a different life. It sits for weeks or months holding the trailer's full weight on one spot, baking in the Florida sun. UV and heat dry the rubber out, the sidewalls develop fine cracks, and the tire gets weaker every season whether you tow or not.

Then one day you load the boat, hit the highway in July, and the heat of the tow finishes what the sun started.

How to read the date code

Every tire has a DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits are the build date: week and year. So 3221 means the 32nd week of 2021. Sometimes the full code is only on one side of the tire, so you may have to check the inboard sidewall.

Our rule for Florida trailers: replace at five to six years from that date, regardless of tread. Sooner if you see sidewall cracking, bulges, or weather-checking. And check the date when you buy a "new" tire too; stock that sat in a warehouse for two years is already two years into its life.

Load range matters as much as age

Trailer tires carry an ST rating and a load range (C, D, E) that tells you how much weight each tire can hold. Add up your trailer, boat, fuel, and gear, and your tires' combined rating needs to clear that number with room to spare. Tires running at or over their limit build heat, and heat is what blows tires in a Miami summer.

If you're not sure what your rig weighs loaded, a CAT scale ticket costs a few bucks and settles it. Guessing settles it too, just on the shoulder.

A few habits that buy you years

Keep them at the max cold pressure printed on the sidewall; low pressure means flex, and flex means heat. Cover the tires or park in shade if the trailer sits for long stretches. Move the trailer a few feet now and then so the tires don't sit on the same spot for months. And check pressures cold before every long tow, especially the run down to the Keys.

What uneven wear is telling you

If a trailer tire does show wear, the pattern matters. Worn on one edge usually means a bent axle or worn suspension parts, and new tires will just wear the same way until the cause is fixed. That's worth a look at the axle and springs at the same time as the tire swap.
