Hub and bearing service is the greasy heart of trailer maintenance: pulling the wheel and hub, inspecting the inner and outer bearings and races, replacing anything pitted or discolored, packing fresh marine-grade grease, fitting a new seal, and setting the preload correctly. We carry complete pre-greased hub kits in the common sizes, so a failed hub usually gets swapped entirely rather than rebuilt on the shoulder.
Bearings are the reason most trailers end up on the side of the road. They're cheap parts protecting expensive ones: a $30 bearing that runs dry takes the hub with it, then the spindle, then sometimes the axle, and a wheel that separates at highway speed endangers everyone around you. Boat trailers have it worst because hot hubs dunked in saltwater suck water past the seals. A repack costs little and takes minutes; the failure it prevents can total a trailer.
Repack bearings yearly on any trailer that sees saltwater, or every 10–12k miles otherwise. Between services, put a hand near each hub after towing: warm is normal, too hot to touch is a warning. Grinding, humming that changes with speed, grease slung on the inside of the wheel, or play when you rock the tire top-to-bottom all mean stop towing and call.
